FULL NAME OF PRODUCT: SmartStart August 1994 Release
COMPANY: Compaq
ASSOCIATED PET: 44631
TRN NUMBER: SW940817-001
SOFTPAQ: N/A

COMPAQ PRODUCTS AFFECTED:
All Compaq Servers using SmartStart for NT manual installation path

DETAIL OF PROBLEM:
When installing Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 from Compaq CD (August 1994 SmartStart) through the manual path (called a NON-SmartStart install at the Main SmartStart Screen,) the user is prompted for the license diskette (to enter activation key). However, the license diskette which comes with the SmartStart package (red) is not accepted, the computer beeps and the message to insert the license diskette continues to appear. The problem is with the volume label on the production (red) license diskettes. The volume label is just a directory entry with a "volume label" bit set in its attribute byte. These license diskettes have the "archive" bit set in the attribute byte as well as the "volume label" bit. The license diskettes used in test have only the "volume label" bit set and that is what the code checks for, therefor, it never finds the label on the production license diskettes.

SOLUTION:
The code has already been changed and this problem will be resolved in the November 1994 release of SmartStart.

SERVICE ACTION:
Inform customer of the above solution.
